CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)

CPR is an essential skill that everyone should learn. People do not need to be medical professionals to know or use CPR, and the Montgomery Fire Department offers quarterly classes to teach this life-saving skill. Knowing CPR empowers you to help someone in a life-threatening situation. As a parent, this skill is crucial for children under five, who tend to put small objects in their mouths, which can lead to choking. Choking is a leading cause of death in this age group, and knowing what to do and how to perform CPR allows you to act quickly. Also, situations may arise when someone’s breathing or heart has stopped. In the summer, working in the heat increases the chances of this happening. The same applies in the winter, when the body is stressed from doing strenuous activities like shoveling snow. Immediate action with CPR is the most effective way to save that individual, as an ambulance may not arrive for several minutes. Providing CPR could mean the difference between life and death for someone unconscious.

First Aid Classes – Responding with Care and Knowledge

The Montgomery Fire Department can offer basic First Aid training, and encourages babysitters, parents, coaches, and all adults to consider first aid certification. First aid training equips individuals with the skills to alleviate suffering, prevent further injury, and prolong life. It can be as simple as easing the pain of a bee sting to calming someone who is having trouble breathing. The knowledge conveyed in first aid classes prepares participants to respond and prioritize care in innovative, effective, and safe ways that can make a significant difference in the experience and life of an injured or ill person.

Items that block doors and windows in your home could keep you from escaping in the event of a home fire and that could mean the difference between life and death. So unblock your exits today! Key to your family’s safety is planning and practicing a home fire escape plan twice a year. Start by identifying two escape routes out of each room, if possible, then make sure that each of those escape routes can be used safely by everyone.

Fire Escape Safety Tips

The Fire Department offers a fire extinguisher training program to local businesses and employers. The class consists of a training video on the different stages of fire and the different types and classes of extinguishers. This is followed by personal instruction coupled with hands-on training. A small flammable liquid fire is extinguished by each participant at the conclusion of the class.

A simple way to remember the steps in using an extinguisher is PASS.

P = Pull (the pin)
A = Aim (the nozzle)
S = Squeeze (the handle)
S = Sweep (the base of the fire)

We encourage everyone to have at least two fire extinguishers in their home, one near the kitchen and one in the garage. During our home fire safety and security visit we can help select mounting locations and provide helpful hints on the selection, use and upkeep of your extinguishers.

Extinguishers are rated by the size and type of fire they are designed to put out. The use of the wrong extinguisher can cause a fire to spread and become worse or may cause injury to the user. A multi-purpose ABC type extinguisher can be used safely on the vast majority of fires that may occur around the house.

In Ohio, prospective foster and adoptive homes must pass a home safety inspection as part of the home study process to ensure a safe environment for a child. This inspection checks for hazards like working smoke alarms, safe chemical storage, covered outlets, and a clean-living space. You may also need to provide a fire safety inspection report from the local fire department. This inspection would be performed after receiving the form provided by either the adoption or foster group.

The Police and Fire Departments inspect all commercial buildings annually and residential buildings upon request to provide helpful hints on making your home as safe as possible. Call the Safety Center at 513-985-1600 to schedule a HomeSAFE check.

This free inspection of your infant car seat installation will help to insure the safety of your child should you be involved in an accident. This program is designed to evaluate the car seat you are using and to verify its correct installation. We don’t install it for you, rather we teach you to correctly install it yourself so you can remove and reinstall it without worry. The training necessary to fully understand all the various car seats manufactured and the correct way to install them in different vehicles limits the number of fire personnel that are certified to do this for our community. Car seat inspection appointments are necessary and should be made as far in advance as possible. For more information, contact the Fire Department at 513-985-1633.

Meet the FirefighterMeet the firefighter is a preschool program we use to introduce young children to firefighters. It was found that when we were outfitted in all of our protective gear, we were intimidating to most children. If confronted by us in an emergency, these children were apt to run and hide from us making rescue more difficult. We have the children meet us dressed like everyone else, and then we put on our gear piece-by-piece in front of them and encourage them to touch our air bottle, gloves, coat, etc. They learn to come to us in an emergency rather than hiding. These programs are normally presented at daycare and pre-school centers, but any organized gathering of children in this age group may be considered.

Smoke detectors, when properly selected and properly installed, serve as the single most crucial factor in whether a family will escape a home fire or not. Smoke detectors should never be disabled, and batteries should be replaced regularly. A simple rule is that when it’s time to change your clocks, it’s also time to change the batteries.

Smoke detectors cannot last forever and must be replaced when they fail to respond to periodic tests, or no later than 10 years from the date of manufacture marked on them.

The City of Montgomery offers (non-hard-wired) smoke detector installations for residents only (limit of 3 per household). We can also come out and perform, at no cost, a home smoke detector inspection or battery replacement (homeowner-supplied batteries).
