Council Message by Ken Suer

2024-Another year! What will we do with it? What will it do to us? There are many possibilities-some good, some not so good. New Year’s resolutions are a recurring feature of our lives. Lots of good intentions, but 80% of resolutions fail within the first month, according to Forbes magazine. You may need some new ideas. You could, for instance:

  • Purge junk-you could investigate and find out what is in your garage, basement, closets, drawers, trunk, purse, and/ or wallet and reduce the clutter.
  • You could resolve to finish just one home improvement project you started and abandoned in the past five years.
  • You could actually put on a full outfit for Zoom calls from your home office (or just put on an outfit).
  • You could avoid food waste by eating the whole package of (cookies, chips, ice cream, etc.) in one setting or-
  • You could lose weight by putting it somewhere you’ll never find it (like your basement or garage).
  • You could build up your biceps by increasing morning reps of doughnut curls.
  • You could spend less than $8000.00 per year at Starbucks.
  • You could try to drive closer to the speed limit and start stopping at ALL of the stop signs in Montgomery. (If more people did this it would be a miracle).
  • You could resolve to learn the names of all of the dogs in your neighborhood and start addressing them by name. (Dogs like this-some have told me so) or-you could resolve to learn the names of some of your human neighbors as

Of course, you could design resolutions for yourself at any time of the year but it is convenient to think in terms of yearly chunks. Having goals is good-accomplishing goals is even better. It’s up to you!

And just what will Council be doing in 2024? Well, the seven of us will carry on the tradition of working cooperatively to shape the vision of the City and produce tangible results. We will not spend time feuding and fighting or trying to advance partisan agendas. Statewide and nationwide, there will be a lot of nasty rhetoric and behavior leading up to the 2024 election.

Our Council has no time for that-we have serious City work to do, and we intend to do it-in a dignified, non-partisan, professional way. Treating people considerately so that they feel included, listened to, seen, and respected is one of our ongoing goals.

One of the great strengths of Montgomery is that many people get involved in doing constructive things to better themselves and the community. What can YOU contribute in 2024?

Have a safe, happy, and productive new year!
