Meet the firefighter is a preschool program we use to introduce young children to firefighters. It was found that when we were outfitted in all of our protective gear, we were intimidating to most children. If confronted by us in an emergency, these children were apt to run and hide from us making rescue more difficult. We have the children meet us dressed like everyone else, and then we put on our gear piece-by-piece in front of them and encourage them to touch our air bottle, gloves, coat, etc. They learn to come to us in an emergency rather than hiding. These programs are normally presented at daycare and pre-school centers, but any organized gathering of children in this age group may be considered.
