Earning an A+ is a significant milestone, whether in school, business, government, charity, or other areas. It acknowledges competence and achievement in fulfilling purpose and mission. One of the most respected rating agencies for communities nationally has given Montgomery an A+ again this year. For perspective, less than 1% of all the communities in Ohio earned that rating. They evaluate six areas to determine the overall rating. Here are the six and how we are doing.

Schools: Sycamore schools consistently rank in the top tier of all school districts in Ohio. Last year, it was awarded a 5-star rating, with sixteen merit semifinalists, and a top 4 rating among all districts in Ohio. A+, you bet!

Housing: We are primarily a residential city with limited space and a robust housing market. The additional apartment options available and growing in the Montgomery Quarter offer alternatives for those ready to downsize or for younger individuals who can’t yet afford a family home. Our recently approved “comprehensive plan” has provided long-term guidance on how to continue to provide housing options that meet the needs of our community.

Good for Families: We receive a resounding A+ in this area, thanks to our seven beautiful, fun parks, our sidewalk program that spans over 30 miles and continues to grow each year, our family-friendly events and activities, including our pool, fitness classes, and our beautification programs for flowers, hanging baskets, streetlights, and lighting.

Crime and Safety: We again receive a strong rating, thanks to our low crime statistics and excellent safety record. Our experienced police and full-time fire departments get the best applicants and immerse them in a culture of exceptional service. And don’t forget our Public Works Department, which, in addition to its daily operations, clears our streets in winter and repairs our potholes.

Nightlife: In addition to our nationally and regionally recognized restaurants, we have added four new ones in the Montgomery Quarter over the last two years. With the opening of The Hotel Rambler this fall, we will have even more choices for food, drink, and event space.

Diversity: We take pride in being a community that understands, recognizes, and values the differences among its members. In fact, our vision says, “Montgomery excels at being a welcoming, healthy, and inclusive community while honoring and building upon its past, focusing on a bright future, and leading with its values.” Plus, our Diversity and Inclusion Commission is recognized as a leader in this area and has been benchmarked by other communities.

So, this national rating agency gave us an A+ and put us in the upper 0.6% of all communities. That certainly aligns with what my family and I believe, and why we have enjoyed living here for over 39 years.
